By Murray, Vermont Bedrooms’ Resident Puppet and Senior Advisor on All Things Sleepy
Well, I’ll be dipped in chocolate and rolled in candy corn! It’s Halloween season again! The pumpkins are glowing, the leaves are falling, and the squirrels around Rutland, Vermont, are busy burying nuts they’ll forget about by Thanksgiving. Some things never change. Me? I’m getting ready for my favorite time of year to sit in a comfortable chair, eat a piece of Halloween candy that I probably shouldn’t have eaten, and complain about how cold it is.
Ah, the joys of getting older!
Of course, Halloween isn’t just about costumes, candy, and trying to figure out why anybody would willingly dress up like a giant inflatable pickle. It’s also a time to appreciate a good night’s sleep. And believe me, folks, there’s nothing scarier than a bad mattress! I’ve seen things in my day that would make a grown man tremble. I’ve seen politicians make promises, teenagers try to explain their music, and a fellow attempt to assemble furniture without reading the instructions. But none of that compares to the horror of lying down on a lumpy old mattress and realizing you’re about as comfortable as a jack-o’-lantern sitting on a bed of gravel.
Now that’s a Halloween nightmare!
The Haunted House Is Nothing Compared to Your Bedroom
Every October, people decorate their homes with cobwebs, skeletons, and creepy little figures that pop out of the bushes when you least expect them. Meanwhile, some folks have a genuine horror show happening right in their own bedrooms. I’m talking about those mattresses that have seen better days. You know the ones. The middle sags like a hammock. The springs squeak louder than a haunted staircase. And there’s always that one spot where you can feel something poking you in the back.
You roll to the left. No good. You roll to the right. Even worse. You try sleeping on your stomach, and suddenly you’re wondering whether your knees have filed a formal complaint. By midnight, you’re doing gymnastics that would impress an Olympic judge.
Listen, my friend. A mattress is supposed to help you rest, not audition you for the circus. If your bed has become more frightening than the haunted hayride down the road, it may be time to look for a replacement. That’s where our friends at Vermont Bedrooms come in. Located in Rutland, Vermont, Vermont Bedrooms makes it easy to explore mattress options online without leaving the comfort of home. And staying home is something I wholeheartedly support.
Mostly because I don’t have a driver’s license.
Murray’s Top Three Halloween Nightmares
Now, I’ve had my share of spooky dreams. Allow me to share the three most terrifying things a fellow can encounter after turning out the lights.
Nightmare No. 1: The Never-Ending Mattress Sale
You walk into a store, and every mattress looks the same. One promises clouds. Another promises luxury. A third apparently promises to change your entire life. By the time you leave, you’ve forgotten why you came in. My advice? Take your time, compare your options, and choose a mattress based on your comfort needs. No crystal ball required.
Nightmare No. 2: The 2:47 A.M. Mattress Escape
You wake up in the middle of the night, uncomfortable and wide awake. You flip your pillow. You rearrange the blankets. You stare at the ceiling and start calculating how many hours remain until morning. Then you remember an embarrassing thing you said in 1987. Suddenly, you’re wide awake until sunrise. A comfortable sleep environment won’t eliminate every sleepless night, but a mattress that suits your needs is a sensible place to start.
Nightmare No. 3: The Morning After
The alarm goes off. You open one eye. Your body feels like it spent the night in a wrestling match with Frankenstein. You sit up slowly, make a noise that sounds like a rusty gate, and shuffle toward the coffee pot. Folks, if this sounds familiar, take a good look at your mattress. If it’s worn out or no longer comfortable, consider whether it’s time for a change. Life is too short to start every morning feeling like a Halloween prop.
Don’t Let Your Mattress Become a Mummy
Here’s a little secret from an old puppet: mattresses don’t stay in tip-top shape forever. Over time, they can wear down, lose support, or develop uncomfortable dips. And while wrapping yourself in toilet paper might make you look like a mummy, it won’t do a thing to fix your mattress. Believe me, I’ve considered it. If your mattress is getting old, waking you up uncomfortable, or making it difficult to find a restful position, it’s worth exploring your options. At Vermont Bedrooms, you can browse mattresses online and take a look at what’s available from the convenience of your home. No spooky salesmen jumping out of closets. No bats flying through the showroom. And no need to bring a flashlight, unless your computer room has a faulty bulb. Just a practical way to start looking for a better night’s sleep.
Five Ways to Keep Halloween from Haunting Your Sleep
Now, even the finest mattress in the world can’t protect you from eating an entire bag of miniature chocolate bars right before bed. That’s a battle you’ll have to fight yourself. But here are five simple ways to make Halloween night a little more restful.
1. Don’t overdo the candy. I know, I know. I’m asking the impossible. But try not to turn your stomach into a haunted candy factory right before bedtime.
2. Keep your bedtime reasonably consistent. The goblins can stay up late. You’ve got work to do in the morning.
3. Put the scary movies away before bed. If you’ve just watched three hours of haunted-house movies, every little noise in the hallway is going to sound suspicious.
4. Make your bedroom comfortable. A cool, quiet, dark room can help set the stage for sleep. And a comfortable mattress certainly doesn’t hurt.
5. Give yourself permission to rest. You don’t have to carve every pumpkin in Vermont, hand out candy to the entire neighborhood, and clean the kitchen before midnight. Some chores can wait until tomorrow.
That’s what I call wisdom. Or laziness. At my age, the distinction gets a little blurry.
A Little Halloween Treat from Murray
Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Murray, you’re a puppet. What do you know about mattresses?” Well, that’s a fair question. I don’t have bones to ache, and I don’t technically need to sleep. But I do spend a great deal of time thinking about it. And I’ve come to one very important conclusion: A good night’s sleep is nothing to be afraid of investing in.
Whether you’re looking for a mattress for yourself, your spouse, a guest bedroom, or that relative who always seems to stay three days longer than planned, comfort matters. After all, when the trick-or-treaters have gone home, the candy bowl is empty, and the last jack-o’-lantern has finally given up the ghost, you’ll be glad to have a comfortable bed waiting for you. And if Uncle Harold falls asleep in the guest room and starts snoring like a chainsaw, well, that’s a problem for another day.
Have a Spooktacular Halloween!
From all of us at Vermont Bedrooms, I hope your Halloween is filled with laughter, treats, good company, and absolutely no mattress-related nightmares. Enjoy the crisp Vermont autumn weather. Admire the colorful foliage. Tell a ghost story or two. Eat a little candy. And when the festivities are over, give yourself the gift of a comfortable place to rest. Visit vermontbedrooms.com to explore mattress options and start making your bedroom a more inviting place to sleep. Well, I’d better wrap things up. I’ve got a bowl of candy to inspect, a pumpkin to admire, and a very important appointment with my favorite chair.
Remember, folks:
Don’t let a bad mattress scare the sleep right out of you!
Happy Halloween, everybody! Until next time, keep your pillows fluffy, your blankets warm, and your skeletons where they belong. Preferably in the closet.
P.S. If you see a vampire this Halloween, don’t invite him into your bedroom. He’ll probably stay up all night anyway. Some people just don’t appreciate a good bedtime.
